Important Announcement Regarding Recent Hacks

Parents and students, please see the following update from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office regarding the recent social media hacking incident(s): Sextortion Press Release

How to secure your accounts:

  • Set up two-factor authenication

Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security that is known as "multi factor authentication" that requires not only a password and username but also something that only that user has on them, i.e. a piece of information only they should know or have access to, such as an alternate email address, code sent by text to their phone, or security questions. If you are unsure on how to set this up on your email or social media accounts, please use Google or other search engine to find the directions.

  • Complex password

Using a complex password rather than an easy-to-guess password will help minimize the risk of someone gaining access to your account. Complex passwords usually involve the following criteria:

    • Changed at least every 180 days.
    • Between 8 and 128 characters long.
    • Use at least 3 of the following types of characters:  (a) uppercase letters, (b) lowercase letters, (c) numbers, and/or (d) special characters
    • Password must be unique and should not be re-used.
  • Device Security Application

Having some form of protection on your device can prevent virus or malware attacks from happening. Examples of free device protection applications:

    • AVG free anti-virus (for personal computers)
    • Lookout Mobile Security (for Android and iOS)

Using the above suggested items, you can reinforce your account and device security to ensure your accounts are protected from outside threats.
